Sobhi Girgis is a consultant psychiatrist and an associate of Dilemma, where he works as a psychiatrist in the developmental clinic. He writes: I have worked as a psychiatrist for over 15 years. Following completion of my training and the Masters in psychiatry and neurology in Egypt, I worked as a specialist psychiatrist in Saudi Arabia. I received further training in the US for a year before coming to the UK in 1995. I completed the basic training in psychiatry in Nottingham and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatry (MRCPsych) and Master of Medical Sciences in Clinical Psychiatry (M. Med. Sci.) Between August 1999 and May 2001 I worked in Rampton hospital, a high secure hospital.. During my work in Rampton hospital I gained extensive experience in forensic issues, writing medico-legal reports and assessing mentally disordered offenders. From May 2001 I have worked as a specialist registrar in psychiatry. I worked with Prof. Tantam in the Sheffield Asperger Syndrome Service for a year (November 2001 - November 2002). This is a national service for assessing and providing specialist advice for adults/adolescents with Asperger syndrome and other autistic disorders.
I have prepared a number of court reports in connection with mentally disordered offenders and legal matters pertinent to people with Asperger syndrome. Currently I work in Wathwood Hospital, a medium secure unit in Rotherham. Additionally I work one day/week at the Francis Willis Unit, a low secure facility in Lincoln. My role includes psychiatric assessment of offenders appearing before the Courts, assessing mentally disordered offenders in prisons or in secure facilities and participating in the overall management of the inpatients at Wathwood Hospital and The Francis Willis Unit. I am approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act. |
