Appointments

How to make an appointment

To make an appointment or to enquire about a pending appointment for psychotherapy, supervision, or consultation please contact us by telephone, fax, letter, email or via the automatic form on this website.

If you need to leave a message about attending an appointment, please ring our contact number, and select the appropriate option.

The first appointment

The first appointment for psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to see whether you want to enter into a contract for counselling or consultancy, and for us to assess whether or not we have something to offer you.

We do charge for the first appointment for a developmental assessment as this will usually be the only appointment necessary for an assessment. We can only send an appointment for a developmental assessment if we have received a referral letter from the relevant doctor or, if it is a medico-legal matter, from the relevant solicitor. You can see copies of the appointments letters that we send to adults here and to parents of children, here.

Facilities and disability access

Waiting Room There is a ground floor counselling room, and ramps can be put in place to enable wheelchair access to it from the front door of the building, via a covered porch. Otherwise access to both consulting rooms is via a conservatory at the back, which is used as a waiting room.

There is an upstairs toilet that can be used by clients. Access to this is by a short staircase which has rails on both sides. There is no wheelchair access.

If you have mobility problems or if you think that you may be disabled from using the facilities at Dilemma Consultancy, please contact us to discuss them. We may be able to provide counselling at your home, or at another suitable location.

Confidentiality

We respect the right of individuals to guard their privacy, and the right of organizations to safeguard information acquired in the course of their business that may be commercially important or otherwise sensitive.

Under normal circumstances, information will be kept completely confidential and will only be seen by the staff directly involved with the University Clinic. However, you may want to note the following.

When a patient is referred by a doctor, information about the patient's condition and their treatment may need to be passed back to the doctor. When insurers or others are paying the fees of clients or supervisors, these third parties may require information about the treatment or supervision. When a clients is seen for a medico-legal report, information will be passed on to the solicitor requesting the report, and may be disclosed in court.

Should you convince a member of staff that you intend to cause serious harm to another person, the member of staff may be legally required to disclose your intention to the relevant authorities if you are unwilling to do so yourself.

Members of staff in the clinic do undertake research. Occasionally this may mean that a member of the clinic staff wishes to publish details of your particular treatment. You will be asked for your written consent before publication takes place. If you refuse, it will not affect your treatment in any way.

Some members of staff or trainees receive supervision. This means that they will discuss your case with a qualified colleague, who will be bound by the same requirements of confidentiality that bind all other staff members.

Members of staff do sometimes refer to what patients and supervisees have told them in lectures and publications. When this happens, the details will also be altered, for example by combining details from several patients, so that so that none of the individuals concerned can be identified.

Some information will be stored on a computer database which has been registered under the Database Protection Act, 1998. This, too, will be confidential. Information from the database may be used for research to improve the service that we offer. If this happens, we will ensure that you can never be identified in any report or publication. Please note that if you decided not to complete the questionnaire, it will not affect our willingness to try to help you, or the type of help that you are offered. You have the right to inspect your entry or to read notes made about you in the clinic. If you wish to do so, please contact us.
