Couple and Marital Work

Emmy van Deurzen has developed particular expertise in applying the existential approach to working with couples. She most often conducts sessions with couples, with alternating individual sessions with each partner. The emphasis is on helping partners to communicate better their own values and goals, as well as their needs. By helping each partner to appreciate the other as a person trying to find the right way forward in a difficult situation, couples can begin to re-evaluate each other, and thereby reduce the number of negative, and increase the number of positive, comments that they make about each other.
